At the bridging point: tutoring newly arrived students in Sweden - Avery
In Sweden, tutoring in the mother tongue is a special support measure primarily intended for newly arrived students to facilitate their transition into the Swedish school system. In this case study of class teachers' and mother tongue tutors' conditions for collaboration at a multi-ethnic primary school, six mother tongue tutors and six class teachers were asked about the purpose of their work, how it was organised, and what could be done to improve working conditions.
Icelandic for adult foreigners: effects of imposing an Icelandic language test - Innes, Skaptadóttir
Legislation linking language course attendance and passage of a language test for residence visas and citizenship, respectively, was enacted in Iceland in the early 2000s. Curricular guidelines and the language test were developed as a result. Research in other countries suggests such structures cause teachers to create de facto policies aligning with legislative goals. We explore here whether school administrators and teachers of adult foreigners find the curricular model and examination have affected their materials and practices.
Citizenship and Educational Attainment amongst the Second Generation: An Analysis of Children of Immigrants in Finland - Kilpi-Jakonen
This article examines the relationship between citizenship and educational attainment at approximately age 16 in Finland using register data. Results suggest that children of immigrants who are Finnish citizens have better educational outcomes than non-citizens, measured with three indicators of educational attainment. However, the Finnish citizens come from families with higher levels of educational and economic resources than non-citizens and this explains much of the relationship between citizenship and education.
